I consider myself a well-read person when it comes to current events. With multiple websites, podcasts, blogs, network news channels and newspapers all providing continuous coverage of the war in Iran, I can confidently state, that I haven’t a clue what the hell is going on over there.
This is not America’s finest hour.
The country is lead by a sleep-deprived, dementia-addled octogenarian, who has no interest in calm, reasoned, “presidential” statements. Former presidents were lambasted for simple misstatements, or flawed information, that somehow got through the “truth machine” too quickly, and made a fool out of the Commander in Chief. This would inevitably lead to a correction, and apologies from the Administration, with pledge to do better.
In the Age of Trump, there is no “machine”. Facts are discarded if they don’t support the desired narrative. Speed is of the essence, not accuracy. It also helps to believe all who follow his statements have the memory of a goldfish. Because, whatever was said an hour ago may have been proven false by actual evidence – and the work now must focus on two things: Deny Trump said anything wrong; and assassinate the character of whoever provided the contradictory evidence.

In times of war, the compulsive lying by Trump becomes a serious matter. Military families, business leaders, allies and more depend on the government to provide clarity amongst the chaos. Instead, it’s Trump who provides the chaos, leaving millions of people on their own to wade through the quagmire of bullshit he created, to each form their own version of the truth. Only a fool would believe this is not dangerous.
An actual President would put the work in to ensure the peril he has placed our soldiers in is a last option. That President would consult with a cadre of experts to come to a diplomatic solution as soon as possible. Donald Trump doesn’t want to do the work. Instead, he bleats out commands on Truth Social, believing our enemies, allies, and the American populace will blindly follow. Building a consensus through compromise and diplomacy is just too hard for Trump. It’s this laziness that will get hundreds, if not thousands of people killed.
If you stop and assess the play by play commentary Trump himself has provided since this ill-conceived war launched in early March, it’s impossible not to be embarrassed to the point of exhaustion:
| Date | Trump Truth Social Updates |
| March 6 | “There will be no deal with Iran except UNCONDITIONAL SURRENDER”. (war begins) |
| March 7 | “Iran is getting beat to HELL, has apologized and surrendered to its Middle East neighbors.” (war over?) |
| March 9 | “If Iran does anything to stop the flow of oil through the Strait of Hormuz, they will be hit 20 TIMES HARDER. Death, Fire Fury will reign upon them.” (war back on?) |
| March 10 | “If Iran has put out any mines in the Strait, we want them removed IMMEDIATELY!” (what happened to the surrender?) |
| March 10 | “I am pleased to report we have completely destroyed 10 inactive mine laying boats”. |
| March 14 | “NATO countries are sending war ships to keep the Strait open and safe. This should have always been a team effort and now it will be!” (odd that no other NATO country announced anything) |
| March 17 | “NATO countries do not want to get involved with our military operation. We no longer need or desire NATO’s assistance – WE NEVER DID!” (Ah. That’s why.) |
| March 20 | “The Strait will have to be guarded and policed by the Nations who use it.” (So… we do need assistance?) |
| March 23 | “I am pleased to report the USA and Iran have had very good and productive conversations!” (So, peace deal pending?) |
| March 26 | “The Iranian negotiators are very different and strange.” (Oh. Talks not going as planned?) |
| April 1 | “Iran’s new Regime President has just asked the USA for a CEASEFIRE!” |
| April 1 | “MAKE A DEAL BEFORE IT’S TOO LATE, AND THERE’S NOTHING LEFT OF WHAT STILL COULD BECOME A GREAT COUNTRY!” (Ceasefire not gonna happen now?) |
| April 5 | “Open the fucking Strait you crazy bastards, or you’ll be living in Hell.” (The infamous Easter Sunday greeting… yikes) |
| April 7 | “A whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again.” (Nothing says diplomacy better than a genocidal threat) |
| April 7 | “I agree to suspend the bombing of Iran for a period of two weeks. This should be a double-sided ceasefire. We have received a 10-point proposal and believe it is a workable basis to negotiate. This is a big day for World Peace.” (Sadly, he hadn’t read the 10-point proposal) |
| April 8 | “There are reports Iran is charging fees to tankers going through the Strait. They better not be!” (And the peace proposal?) |
| April 17 | “Iran has just announced the Strait is fully open and ready for full passage! Thank you!” |
| April 19 | “Iran recently announced they are closing the Strait.” |
| May 3 | Trump announces the launch of “Project Freedom”, which includes American war ships escorting tankers through the Strait. |
| May 5 | “Project Freedom will be paused for a short period of time.” (as of today, 5/14, Project Freedom remains on pause) |
Virtually nothing Trump says can be trusted. I suppose this should not be surprising, given the man breaches Agreements with allies and companies on a regular basis – even Agreements his own Administration negotiated in the recent past. What counterparty would agree to ANYTHING with this doofus at the helm?
Now, as Trump and his family, along with a dozen or so billionaire businesspeople, prepare for a trip to China for a “summit” May 13-14, one has to be skeptical at best given there isn’t one China expert in the entourage. President Xi is many things, but nobody who has encountered him has ever walked away thinking he wasn’t intelligent. We now wait for the inevitable embarrassment of whatever Trump says or does in Beijing. It can’t be avoided.

One can only hope that Taiwan isn’t sacrificed in exchange for a new Trump Tower in Shanghai. Is there anyone out there who DOESN’T believe this a distinct possibility?
